Can you remain truly anonymous online? Here’s where to start – MarketWatch

A new year could usher in increasingly restrictive surveillance laws, while select authoritarian regimes are increasingly censoring the internet. Navigating it all can feel daunting to individuals aiming to safeguard their online selves, especially when it comes to using public Wi-Fi and managing financial transactions.

The only way is to break away.  Give up all the devices and just walk away.  Even doing that doesn’t promise full anon and in addition brings another consequence which is pressure from corporations and governments to rejoin the borg.  I can foresee being forced to have some sort of smart devices or else face serious consequences such as no access to banking (which would be a nightmare if they co cashless) or no access to roads (ie ezpass) or no access to healthcare, etc.

It was easy to see this was coming way back when they were talking about and designing the “social web”.   I can remember the days when the web was wild and independent and even then we could see the corporate co-opting of it and sadly I have to admit I’ve been part of that effort.
