What exactly is an Ear Worm?

They’re sections of songs that we remember in our minds. Once they start, these music memories can repeat uncontrollably—for hours, days, even weeks at a time. Research indicates that nine out of ten people have experienced earworms that have lasted for an hour or longer.

The phrase was coined more than 100 years ago by Germans who called it öhrwurm.

Here’s the source for above and a great article: Your Brain on Music: Earworms. When songs get stuck… get stuck… get stuck… in our brains

I am rarely walking around without one and the duration can sometimes be a week or more. It’s a burden. But typically if I am really bugged by it I can get rid of it by intentionally replacing it. (One of the easiest tunes I can use to get rid of it is – oddly enough – this one.) Of course, if you are or have been a musician learning songs either the music or the lyrics rather demands you make the piece an ear worm. At least it was that way for me.

So let’s share ear worms, shall we? Here is mine for the day… it’s been stuck for 3 days now. It comes from this song and I’m having more than one loop from it…

Lyrics (I highlighted the ones that are my ear worms)

If I could become someone that I could fall in love with
It’d probably be easier to find you
Probably be easier to find you

If I could become someone that I could fall in love with
Discuss with and learn from
Probably be easier to find you

It feels like there’s
Hands around my neck
You got a lot of nerve comin’ round here without a reason to love me
In all that you’ve done with all that you’ve done
I think you’ve done enough

Hands around my neck
You got a lot of nerve comin’ round here without a reason to love me
In all that you’ve done with all that you’ve done
I think you’ve done enough

Hands around my neck
You got a lot of nerve comin’ round here without a reason to love me
In all that you’ve done with all that you’ve done
I think you’ve done enough
(With all that you-with all that you’ve done)
(With all that you-with all that you’ve done)
(With all that you-with all that you’ve done)

I know what it’s like to be hopeless
Know what it feels to be broken
It’s a slow process
It takes time to love yourself

And get to know somebody the longer you wait
The better it makes it
The longer you wait

It feels like there’s
Hands around my neck
You got a lot of nerve comin’ round here without a reason to love me

In all that you’ve done with all that you’ve done
I think you’ve done enough
Hands around my neck
You got a lot of nerve comin’ round here without a reason to love me
In all that you’ve done with all that you’ve done
I think you’ve done enough
(With all that you’ve done)
(With all that you’ve done)
(With all that you’ve done)
(With all that you’ve done)
(With all that you’ve done)
(With all that you’ve done)
(With all that you-with all that you)

Hands around my neck
You got a lot of nerve comin’ round here without a reason to love me
In all that you’ve done with all that you’ve done
I think you’ve done enough
