What happens when 25 NPCs controlled by ChatGPT are thrown into a virtual world?
I can think of endless possibilities. It definitely can, and will, revolutionize the gaming industry. That clip where the NPC says, “You’re finally awake.” is from the VR version of Skyrim… a standalone game. Imagine you enter a non-mmorpg and yet have intriguing experiences with an NPC. Holy smokes. Who needs people! Who needs the drama?
In fact, check this out:
Of course I can see the downside to all of this, too. If you don’t need people and can be satisfied and fulfilled by AI controlled NPCs it would make for more isolation.
This comes on the heels of this published within the last 24 hours on The Guardian:
AI poses existential threat and risk to health of millions, experts warn
BMJ Global Health article calls for halt to ‘development of self-improving artificial general intelligence’ until regulation in place
My first projects with IBM Watson platforms was in the medical area. Watson Discovery Advisor was working on genetic genomes to identify cancer markers. This started about ten years ago so this is not something new here, not at all.
And how much of this particular warning is just so much hand wringing?
“AI could harm the health of millions via the social determinants of health through the control and manipulation of people, the use of lethal autonomous weapons and the mental health effects of mass unemployment should AI-based systems displace large numbers of workers.“AI could harm the health of millions via the social determinants of health through the control and manipulation of people, the use of lethal autonomous weapons and the mental health effects of mass unemployment should AI-based systems displace large numbers of workers.“
As always, I really don’t think regulation is going to happen. Perhaps in other countries but not here in the good ole USA. Pandora’s box is open and no way will corporations be forced to stuff it all back in and close it again, not for even a month will they do that.
We’re in it now. For better and worse.
