Interactive Fiction

AS a gamer and a writer, my favorite games are story rich. (duh) Did anyone else ever play that text based game titled: Lifeline?

Lifeline was released in 2015 by Three Minute Games. It’s a text-based adventure game where a space cadet named Taylor survives a crash on a desolated moon and opens a comms channel with you — the player. All via text messages. Well, I loved that game. I was inspired and since then (uh, 11 years?!?) I wanted to create an interactive text based game.

Inspired by all my friends who are doing creative and amazing things with AI, I wondered, “Could I….”

Oh yes I could!

In my book of short stories there is one titled, It’s Your Choice. I used that story and in less than five minutes, most of that time spent telling Claude what I wanted, out popped an interactive “game” based on my story.

I used free claude (claude.ai). I told it what I wanted. I copy and pasted in my story. Claude did its magic. Boom! Available for download was my .html file. I thought, whaaaaaaaaa? That quick? That easy? No way. But, I’m going to need all sorts of stuff (including a paid claude account) to post it on my kel.zone website, right? Nope! Here it is below. All I had to do was create a block in the post of custom html and paste the whole thing in.

wow

Check it out (note: being 100% not fancy – every time you make a selection in the red box it will take you back to the top of this post and you’ll need to scroll down to read the new bit then make a choice, repeat. What do you want for 5mins?!)

Choose Your Path

So, the post and html code isn’t fancy. I didn’t include images. It doesn’t have many branches. It’s a rather simple set of story elements because the purpose was to create choices. And as the Author’s Note states, just doing those few branches and trying to keep track of them wrecked my head. Recall, that book of stories was 30 Stories in 30 Days so I only had one day to work on it!

Anywho — this proves to me that creating an interactive story is now well within reach. I predict this is only the beginning….

muhahahahaha
